Heartworm Screening and Prevention

Wellness Testing and Examination
Regular examinations and wellness testing are
vital to the maintenance of healthy lives.  Many
diseases can be detected prior to the onset of
any outward signs!  Our pets age, on average,
6 times as fast as we do- so one year can
equal 5-7 years for your pet.  We highly
recommend wellness exams yearly for pets
less than 6 years and twice yearly for animals
over 7 years of age.   At these visits, testing
can be tailored for your individual pet’s
medical needs.  Items that will be discussed
may include blood panels, fecal parasite
screening, heartworm screening and
prevention, glaucoma testing, baseline
radiography, early renal screening and many
more services.

Vaccinations/ Vaccination Titers
All puppies and kittens need vaccinations to
prevent deadly and painful infectious
diseases.  Each vaccine is carefully selected by
the veterinarian for safety and efficacy.  Once
completed, these vaccinations are 100 %
guaranteed to be effective  Veterinary
medicine has found through extensive
research, many of our quality vaccines can
provide immunity that lasts 3-5 years!  At
McDowell Mountain Animal Hospital we are
proud to be able to provide an alternative to
annual vaccinations for our adult patients.
Vaccine titers are simple blood tests that can
check for the antibodies that provide
protection from the deadly diseases that are
prevented by the vaccines.  Please ask about
your many options at your next visit!

Full Diagnostic Laboratory Services
We are proud to offer a full service laboratory
including biopsy, bacterial and fungal cultures,
diagnostic cytology, blood testing, hormonal
assays, fecal parasitology and even x ray
consultations from a board certified
radiologist.  Our laboratory is local to Phoenix-
providing quick results and can even be called
for immediate pickup if needed.

In house Diagnostic Testing
We are happy to provide state of the art in-
house diagnostic testing including heartworm,
feline leukemia and FIV screening, major
organ functions, electrolytes levels, blood
counts and MANY more.  Some situations
require immediate testing to allow for proper
care of our hospitalized or severely ill patients.

Radiology- X ray and Ultrasound
Many diseases are not visible from the outside
of the body.  X ray and ultrasound allow a
non-invasive way to look inside and see if
there are any problems.  Our hospital has
brand new and state-of-the-art equipment
that is designed specifically for the veterinary
field.  The ability to look inside can allow for
painless diagnosis and monitoring of many
diseases.

Hospitalization
Some patients will require hospitalization for
monitoring, oxygen therapy, intravenous
fluids, and diabetes testing.  Many of our
hospitalized patients can be effectively treated
during normal daytime hours.  We do not
provide after hours after hours care or care
on Sundays.  If required, complete transfer of
medical records can be provided to a 24 hour
emergency and critical care facility.  We are
also proud to provide a completely sanitized
isolation ward to accommodate animals with
potentially contagious conditions separated
from other patients.  This allows for safer
hospitalization of all patients!

Full Pharmacy
Many pets require prescription medications to
treat medical conditions.  Some human
medications can be used, but the majority of
the time, animal-specific medication or doses
are required.  We can conveniently provide
these vital medications at the time of your
visit.  We can also provide specialized
compounded referrals- some medications
need to be custom-sized or flavored to ease
administration.  Please let us know if you have
ANY special needs or concerns about your
pets’ medications!  Medications cannot work if
you are unable to give them as directed.

Surgery
Surgery and general anesthesia are
intimidating to most pet owners.  We are
proud to say that we do everything possible
to minimize the risks or pain associated with
these procedures.  Through pre-anesthetic
blood testing, IV catheters to support blood
pressure and the internal organs, the custom
use of high-quality human anesthetics and
meticulous intra-operative monitoring, we can
provide the safest and highest quality services
to our furry friends.
All pets should be spayed or neutered at six
months of age.  We are proud to provide this
service, along with a variety of other surgical
procedures.  These include bladder stone
removal, internal organ biopsy, mass
removal/biopsy, intestinal foreign body
removal, stomach tacking (gastropexy) for
animals predisposed to “bloat”, laceration
repair, and MANY others!

Ophthalmology
Dog and cats rely heavily on visual
communications.  The eyes are a very complex
and sensitive set or organs.  Glaucoma,
cataracts, inflammation, allergies, eyelid
problems, and “dry eye” are all common
problems encountered in our furry family-
members.  Please report any eye problems as
soon as noticed.  McDowell Mountain Animal
Hospital is proud to be able to diagnose and
treat many ocular conditions!

Dermatology
The skin is the single largest organ in the
body.  Our pets’ skin and coat are very
important to their overall health.  Skin mites,
infections, abrasions, allergies, immune-
mediated disorders, or even cancer can be
detected with a thorough exam.  Pet owners
are usually the first to notice hairloss, lumps,
bumps or rashes.  Be sure to check your pet
regularly and report any problems to the
veterinarian.

Medicated Bathing
McDowell Mountain Animal Hospital is proud to
help many skin conditions with prescription-
strength medicated baths.  Odors, rashes, hair
loss, and many allergies can be helped with
medicated bathing.  We have the shampoos,
conditioners and the facilities to provide a
comfortable and luxurious bathing experience
for your pet!  We also offer standard bathing-
please let us know of the need for other
grooming services.  If demand is present, we
will look into hiring a full time groomer!

High-Quality Maintenance and Prescription
Diets
In recent years, nutrition has been found to
be critical to health.  Cats, dogs, and people all
have very different nutritional needs.  We are
proud to carry and prescribe a full line of
premium and well-researched pet foods.  The
foods have been carefully formulated for
nutrition, quality and taste!  Many diseases
can be treated or cured with proper nutrition
and selected ingredients.  Please inquire about
our high quality, medically researched
maintenance and prescription diets.  We stock
them in the hospital for your convenience!

Dentistry including Digital Dental X ray
Did you know that 70% of dogs and cats have
periodontal disease by 4 years of age?
Routine and daily brushing is highly
recommended, but sometimes it is difficult for
owners.  Maintenance can also be enhanced
with oral rinses, enzyme-treated rawhide
chews, and proper nutrition.  Even with these
tools, most dogs and cats require some
veterinary care.   Most of our major problems
are found deep under the gums.  With our
patients calmly anesthetized and carefully
monitored, dental cleanings help us find and
treat tartar, plaque and periodontal disease.
This service includes probing and cleaning
under the gums, x-rays of the roots and
bones, and removal of tartar and polishing of
teeth.  Extraction of abscessed/fractured or
otherwise painful teeth can also be performed
at the same visit.  "Teeth Cleanings" provide
by other facilities are considered to be
practicing veterinary medicine without a
license and are illegal.  Our veterinarian can
easily provide a FREE dental evaluation before
anesthesia to let you know your options for
your pet’s oral health.  Please inquire about
our services any time!

Daytime Emergency Services
Most people and dogs would prefer to stay
out of the emergency room, but problems can
occur at any time.  Injuries, cuts, limps,
vomiting, diarrhea, hot spots and many more
problems happen suddenly and require
immediate attention.  If anything ever
happens, please call and head immediately to
the hospital.  Our patients will be evaluated by
the veterinarian or a certified veterinary
technician and seen as soon as possible.  The
state of the art equipment, facilities and a
highly trained team, make McDowell Mountain
Animal Hospital ready for almost any
emergency.

Luxury and Medical Boarding
Leaving a beloved pet when traveling can be
very difficult for both the pet and the owner.
We are proud to be able to provide small and
exclusive boarding services.  Many boarding
facilities cannot accept animals on chronic
medications and geriatric pets.  Our highly-
trained medical staff can provide a calm and
soothing environment with medical
knowledge.  Space is very limited, so please
make reservations early.  Full vaccinations and
heartworm/tick prevention are required for
the safety of all of our guests.

Senior Care
Our pets are living longer and fuller lives with
the help of modern medicine.  Amazingly, by 7
years of age, our pets are considered seniors.
These pets should be examined twice yearly
and a full preventative plan for wellness can
be tailored for each patient.  Cardiac (heart),
renal (kidney), glaucoma/cataracts (eye), and
many other specifics can be bundled into our
senior wellness program.  If you are
scheduling a senior visit- please fast your pet
that morning and try to obtain a fresh urine
sample (we can get it in the hospital if you are
unable).  These two easy steps can provide
invaluable information and allow for more
accurate and convenient testing!

Heartworm Screening and Prevention
Heartworm is a blood parasite that is
transmitted by mosquitoes.  The larvae are
injected by mosquito bites and the worms
grow in the delicate blood vessels of the lungs
and heart.  Dogs show NO SYMPTOMS until
the heart/lungs are already compromised!  In
the past 10-15 years, we have seen the
numbers of mosquitoes rising in the valley.
The number of dogs who travel to the
Midwest, Southeast, Northeast, and even
California is also increasing.  All of these
factors are allowing this deadly disease into
our valley of the sun.  Regular screening and
monthly (yummy) preventative tablets are an
easy and convenient way to protect our pets.
Please let us know if you need heartworm
prevention- it is available in 6 or 12 month
supplies.
